Nancy's Hooded Vest

My friend Nancy has always been my fashion role model. She seems to have an innate sense of classic style, and this vest is just the sort of thing we'd find if we peeked into her closet.

It's got a great hood ...

... and adjustable back ties so that you can pull in the back waist as much or a little as you like.

The armhole shaping is worked using cable decreases. Don't they look good!

Vest is knitted flat from the bottom in one piece. Short rows shape the shoulders, and shoulders are seamed using a 3-needle bind-off.

Stats

Measurements of finished vest - buttoned: 32 (35, 38, 41, 45) (49, 53, 58)" Recommended ease: 1 to 4". Shown in size 35 with 1" ease on 34" dress form and with 0" ease on model.

Yarn: Sunday Knits 5 ply (worsted weight) in Eden (merino), Nirvana (merino cashmere), Brigadoon (merino tweed) or Angelic (merino angora); 125 m / 137 yd per 50 g / 1.75 oz skein: 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) (8, 8, 9) skeins. Shown in Eden Stone.
Substitute any worsted weight yarn that works nicely to gauge: 650 (690, 750, 820, 890) (960, 1040, 1130) yds.

Needles & notions: Size 8 US (5.0 mm) for gauge plus a third needle for 3-needle bind-off, cable needle or double-pointed needle; size 6 US needles for back baffle and drawstrings, tapestry needle, markers, six 3/4" buttons..

Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch.

Techniques used: Cable decreases, buttonholes using cable cast on, shoulders finished with a 3-needle bind off, kitchener stitch for grafting hood. All techniques are explained.
